A British immigration court ruled that a Chinese national, Yang, had gained a high level of trust from Prince Andrew, leading to potential business collaborations. Yang was suspected of espionage for the Chinese Communist Party, prompting a ban from entering the UK.
A British immigration court published a ruling on Thursday revealing that a Chinese national, Yang, had secured a significant level of trust with Prince Andrew, who was willing to engage in business activities with him. Yang was suspected of carrying out covert and deceptive activities for the Chinese Communist Party, according to Britain's interior ministry. Until a High Court judge lifted an anonymity order on Monday, Yang's alleged espionage activities were unknown.
He denied espionage charges, stating he had done nothing illegal. Prince Andrew claimed he ceased all contact with Yang after the UK government raised concerns. Details about the alleged spying case emerged last week at a special immigration tribunal, which upheld a decision by British authorities to ban Yang from entering the UK in 2023. Judges agreed with MI5, Britain's domestic intelligence, that Yang represented a risk to national security and dismissed his appeal. Letters from a senior advisor to Andrew reportedly justified the conclusion that Yang had earned a substantial degree of trust from a senior member of the Royal Family, who was prepared to engage in business activities with him. Yang was a key member of an initiative by Andrew to support entrepreneurs and was even invited to the prince's 60th birthday. A statement from Prince Andrew's office said: 'The Duke of York followed advice from HMG and ceased all contact with the individual after concerns were raised.' The duke met the individual through official channels, with nothing of a sensitive nature ever discussed. He is unable to comment further on matters relating to national security.' Yang dismissed the spying claims, stating: 'I have done nothing wrong or unlawful, and the concerns raised by the Home Office against me are ill-founded,' in a statement
