Prince Harry has followed in the footsteps of his late mother Princess Diana after clearing a minefield in Angola as part of his royal engagements in Africa. The Duke Of Sussex retraced Diana’s footsteps as he wore protective body armour and a protective visor while walking through a partially cleared minefield on Friday.

After leaving his wife, Meghan Markle, and son Archie for solo engagements, Harry sparked similarities to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales’ 1997 visit to the minefield in which she urged the world to ban the weapons. In a post on the royal couples’ Instagram account, Harry shared a poignant quote by his mother as he revealed how he wanted to retrace the legacy of her work. “The Duke is humbled to be visiting a place and a community that was so special to his mother, and to recognise her tireless mission as an advocate for all those she felt needed her voice the most, even if the issue was not universally popular,” Sussex royal posted. Making a speech from the landmine site, Harry praised the efforts of the Halo Trust, who has helped the community to “find peace”. “Landmines are an unhealed scar of war. By clearing the landmines we can help this community find peace, and with peace comes opportunity,” he said. “Additionally, we can protect the diverse and unique wildlife that relies on the beautiful Kuito river that I slept beside last night. “That river and those wildlife are your natural assets and, if looked after, will bring you unlimited opportunities in the conservation-led economy.” Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's son Archie steals spotlight during his first royal engagement – as he meets Archbishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa View gallery He added: “It is fitting that this project starts in Dirico, at the convergence of the two rivers that flow from Angola's islands down to the Okavango Delta. “These two rivers provide water and life to over a million people downstream and an essential and incredibly delicate habitat for an abundance of wildlife. “Just as these rivers extend for miles, so must this project extend far beyond Dirico. Outside the national parks, large parts of this crucial watershed also need to be cleared of land mines. “Clearing the full watershed will take an international effort. Everyone who recognises the priceless importance of safeguarding Africa's most intact natural landscape should commit fully to this mission.” It comes after Harry was joined by his son Archie and wife Meghan for a public appearance earlier this week, as the world had their first real glimpse of the four-month-old. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex brought their baby son to the engagement in Cape Town as part of their royal visit to Africa, with little Archie meeting anti-apartheid activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu. And he’s outgrown his Invictus one.” She later told the guests: “I just thought that, in the spirit of community, what's so nice is to be able to share some of the things that we have at home as well. "And so we can obviously make sure everything you need is provided for you, but we've brought some of the things that my friends and I used for our kids and Archie, that don't fit anymore.”
