Prince Harry says he and Meghan Markle were 'brought together for a reason' as couple accept award

Prince Harry has said he and his wife Meghan Markle were "brought together for a reason" as he discussed their "commitment to a life of service". The Duke of Sussex, 37, also acknowledged he and his wife Meghan, 40, "come from very different backgrounds" as they collected a joint award together.

Harry and Meghan were special guests at the Images Awards, where they were honoured the the NAACP President's Awards to mark their "distinguished public service". A number of high profile names have previously received the award including Colin Powell, Muhammad Ali, Rihanna and LeBron James. He said on Saturday night: "Before I begin, we would like to acknowledge the people of Ukraine, who urgently need our continued support as a global community. "I also echo the immense gratitude for tonight, both for this award and this community for welcoming me so warmly." The Prince then touched on the different upbringings himself and his wife Meghan had experienced, but how they were "brought together for a reason". He said: "I think it's safe to say that I come from a very different background from my incredible wife, yet our lives were brought together for a reason. "We share a commitment to a life of service, a responsibility to combat injustice and a belief that the most often overlooked are the most important to listen to." The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot in Mary 2018 and later announced their decision to step back from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family.Meghan also discussed their move in her speech as she said: "We moved to California, my home state, shortly before the murder of George Floyd. "For Black America, those nine minutes and 29 seconds transcended time, invoking centuries of our unhealed wounds. "In the months that followed, as my husband and I spoke with the civil rights community, we committed ourselves and our organisation, Archewell, to illuminating those who are advancing racial justice and progress."
