Prince Harry has reached an agreement with News Group News papers (NGN) ending his legal battle over accusations of unlawful information gathering. The Duke of Sussex alleged that journalists and private investigators working for the company, which publishes The Sun and previously published the now-defunct News of the World, targeted him.
The trial, initially scheduled for January 21st at the High Court in London, faced multiple delays, including three adjournment requests and a Court of Appeal bid, ultimately preventing it from commencing. On Wednesday morning, Harry's barrister, David Sherborne, announced that both parties had reached a settlement. NGN offered a full and unequivocal apology to the Duke of Sussex for the serious intrusion into his private life, particularly for incidents involving unlawful activities by private investigators working for The Sun between 1996 and 2011. The company also apologized for phone hacking, surveillance, and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators connected to the News of the World. NGN further expressed regret for the extensive coverage and intrusion into Harry's and his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales's private lives, especially during his younger years. It was acknowledged, without admitting any illegality, that NGN's response to the 2006 arrests and subsequent actions was regrettable. A third request to postpone the trial was denied by Mr. Justice Fancourt, following two previous requests believed to be related to settlement discussions. The judge felt both sides had been given ample time to resolve their differences. Lawyers from both sides sought permission to appeal the judge's decision, but this request was also dismissed. However, they could have challenged the decision through the Court of Appeal, meaning the trial would have been adjourned regardless. In April, the High Court learned that actor Hugh Grant had settled his case against NGN due to the potential for a £10 million legal bill if it went to trial. Mr. Sherborne stated at the hearing that 'the Duke of Sussex is subject to the same issues that Sienna Miller and Hugh Grant have been subject to, which is that the offers are made that make it impossible for them to go ahead'.
