Prince William has opened up about the public grief he experienced following the death of his mother, Princess Diana. He confessed that at the time, he "couldn't understand" why people who didn't personally know her were so affected by her passing.
The event triggered an outpouring of public sorrow and also drew attention to her young sons. William was just 15 and Harry was 12 at the time, and both were photographed bravely attending her funeral. Prince William has opened up about the overwhelming public grief he witnessed following his mother's death. Recalling the moment he stepped outside Kensington Palace, he described seeing a "sea of flowers" and hearing the crowd's intense emotions.
Reflecting on his role as Lord High Commissioner to the 2021 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, William also spoke of the painful memories tied to Scotland, where he learned of Princess Diana's death while at Balmoral. "Scotland is incredibly important to me and will always have a special place in my heart. I've been coming to Scotland since I was a small boy," he said.
