Prince William visited Toxteth, Merseyside, to highlight community initiatives for young people. His visit coincided with the sentencing of child killer Axel Rudakubana, but is believed to be coincidental. The Prince met with young people involved in various community projects, including playing football with them at the Tiber Young People's Steering Group.

The Prince of Wales appeared to be having a wonderful time as he participated in a football match during a visit to Merseyside today. Prince William , 42, visited Toxteth , situated just 30 miles away from Southport, to highlight community initiatives designed for young people in the region.

While it is understood that the royal's visit to the area, coinciding with the sentencing of child killer Axel Rudakubana, is purely coincidental, the Prince and Princess of Wales have consistently demonstrated strong support for the community. They made a deeply poignant visit to Southport last October, meeting individuals who were profoundly impacted by the horrific events of July. Rudakubana was sentenced to a minimum term of 52 years at Liverpool Crown Court today after confessing to the murders of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last year. Besides privately meeting the families of the three murdered young girls, the couple engaged in conversations with emergency service personnel who provided crucial assistance at the scene of the tragedy last July.Today, Prince William was surrounded by people eager for selfies during a visit to Liverpool, where he joined a football match watched by former player and manager Sir Kenny Dalglish at the Tiber Young People's Steering Group. Locals braved the cold in Toxteth to capture photos with William and shake his hand after he visited two community groups that support young people. However, despite his evident enjoyment of the game, William was quick to make a light-hearted jest about his sporting abilities. The Prince of Wales appeared to be having a ball as he joined in a football game during a visit to Merseyside today. Asked about his involvement in the football game he played with young people at the center, the prince said: 'We'll ignore that. It is the worst thing when you turn up and try to play cold.' William has had a rather football-centric week - following his trip to Monaco on Tuesday to watch his beloved Aston Villa play. He took a tour of the center, which is scheduled for completion in February with the assistance of funding from The Royal Foundation's community impact programme, met young people actively involved in fundraising for the project, and joined in a game of football before meeting Sir Kenny and former Everton players Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart. They engaged in discussions about football, with William telling former Liverpool striker and manager Sir Kenny that his former team would probably 'steamroll everyone' as they currently lead the Premier League, before Stuart jokingly remarked it could 'come off the rails' when they next face Everton. The royal was engulfed by people as he departed the new Tiber community and football center on Tagus Street before making his way to a waiting car. Earlier on Thursday, William's initial stop was Cycle of Life, a non-profit cycling organisation, supported by BBC Children in Need, which strives to assist young people from diverse backgrounds in improving their physical and mental well-being, as well as enhancing their employment prospects. William smiled as he observed young people constructing and maintaining bikes during the visit today. William, dressed in a smart bottle green overshirt, brown jumper, and blue shirt, met students on the Cycle of Life scheme and witnessed their entrepreneurial cargo bikes in action. At Cycle of Life, he pumped up a bicycle tire and enjoyed a hot chocolate as he interacted with young people who had benefited from the initiative, which was established in 2020.The prince had his game face on as he got stuck into the match during his visit on Thursday. The teenagers were clearly not intimidated to meet a member of the royal family, as they were keen to show him a good game. As he tested the brakes on the bike he was working on, he said he believed the correct way to stop was to squeeze both brakes at the same time, but joked his children like to do things differently. He said: 'My children quite like pulling just the back brake and sliding along. Usually the back wheel will come past you. There is a technique.' William was scheduled to join a short bike ride from the center in Princes Road, but it was cancelled due to heavy rain and wind. It's been a sporty week for the royal, as William was spotted in the stands watching Aston Villa's Champions League defeat to Monaco in the Principality on Tuesday night. The boyhood Villa fan has been a frequent fixture for his side's European travails, first taking in their historic return to the competition at the start of the season against Bayern Munich at Villa Park
