The Prince of Wales has greeted US President-elect Donald Trump in Paris as the two met for the first time since the former businessman's election in 2016
Prince William has warmly greeted US President-elect Donald Trump in Paris. The Prince of Wales made the journey to the French capital for the ceremonial reopening of Notre Dame cathedral, which suffered a devastating fire back in 2019.
Among the attendees was Mr Trump, who shared a brief exchange and handshake with William. The prince also received a warm welcome from French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte. William is set to chat with America’s outgoing first lady Jill Biden at the ceremony before meeting Mr Trump again at another location in Paris. Originally, William and Mr Trump were scheduled to meet prior to the cathedral event.
The prince last met the 78 year old in 2019 during his state visit to the UK. It's expected that William will discuss the importance of the US-UK relationship with both Mr Trump and Mrs Biden. His last official visit to Paris was in 2017 when he travelled with wife Kate following the Brexit result. Earlier this year, he joined world leaders in Normandy for the 80th anniversary commemorations of the Second World War D-Day landings.
The reopening of Notre Dame included the ritualised opening of the cathedral’s massive doors, the reawakening of its thunderous organ and the celebration of the first Mass. Tickets for the first week of Masses were snapped up in just 25 minutes, according to the cathedral’s rector.
