Who is Lady Susan Hussey? Prince William's godmother who resigned after racist remarks
Lady Susan Hussey has stepped down after a prominent black advocate for survivors of domestic abuse revealed that she was repeatedly asked by a member of the Buckingham Palace household where she “really came from” while attending the Queen Consort's reception.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace apologised for the “unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments” and Lady Susan has now stepped down from her honorary role as one of three Ladies of the Household, to which she was newly appointed to help King Charles at formal occasions.Lady Susan, 83, is the fifth daughter of the 12th Earl and Countess Waldegrave and was married to former BBC chair Marmaduke Hussey before his passing in 2006.
Lady Susan served as one of Queen Elizabeth II’s lady-in-waiting for more than 60 years, and accompanied the late monarch to some significant royal occasions, including the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021. Having been described as one of the late Her Majesty’s most trusted figures, Lady Susan was even part of the reduced selection of staff who attended to the Queen at Windsor while in lockdown.
