Prince William reportedly first spotted his future wife, Kate Middleton , during a charity fashion show at the University of St Andrews in 2022. Both were fresh-faced 19 year old students pursuing a History of Arts degree.
Kate, a former Marlborough College pupil, agreed to participate in the fashion show and strutted down the runway in a sheer mauve dress over a bandeau bikini. William, who was among the spectators, is said to have turned to a friend and remarked, 'Kate's hot', as she confidently graced the catwalk. An old university mate of the couple later revealed that it was 'clear' that 'William was smitten with Kate', adding 'He actually told her she was a knockout that night, which caused her to blush.' The friend shared with Vanity Fair magazine that their 'chemistry' was palpable from that initial encounter, stating Kate 'really made an impression' on the future King. Fast forward 24 years, and while Kate continues to be seen as a style icon, her fashion influence has evolved significantly, reports the Mirror . The so-called 'Kate effect' now sees items she wears selling out instantly - including the Reiss camel dress she donned for her meeting with the Obamas in 2011 and the blue Issa wrap dress she wore for her and Prince William's engagement interview in 2010. 'The fact people can go and buy what Kate's wearing and have a little piece of royal glamour in their lives is so important,' says fashion historian Rosie Harte, author of The Royal Wardrobe. 'In this social media age, it's almost influencer adjacent.' Her ivory wedding gown, which was designed by Sarah Burton, head designer at Alexander McQueen, has become particularly iconic, with its satin bodice and full skirt. 'It was inspired by the Victorian tradition of corsetry that is a particular Alexander McQueen hallmark', Buckingham Palace revealed at the time, and included floral motifs appliqued onto silk net by workers at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace. 'Kate has led the way in creating a distinct royal red-carpet look,' says Rosie. 'It's not quite Hollywood, because you can tell she's still a princess. But it's cooler and more fashionable than in the past and she has fun with it.' Kate is also credited with championing British designers too, including Jenny Packham, Emilia Wickstead and Catherine Walker, as well as Alexander McQueen. 'People usually think of Paris and Milan when it comes to fashion, but we have this incredible pool of talent in Britain, and Kate shines a light on it.'
