The Princess Royal was seen laughing with a Roman soldier at the historic site
A history and heritage centre near Wellingborough was given a royal seal of approval last week when Princess Anne officially opened the site. The Queen's only daughter attended the grand opening of Chester House Estate last Wednesday, July 20, and unveiled a bronze plaque.
The estate, which can also be hired for events and weddings, is owned and managed by North Northamptonshire Council . It was purchased in 2004 with a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.A total of £15m was spent turning the site into a sustainable visitor destination. The Princess Royal was given a tour of the estate by the estate's manager, Jack Pishhorn and met with members of NNC, Chester House Estate, Historic England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Nenescape.
"Since opening we have welcomed an astonishing 140,000 visitors, we have seen 5 new businesses open and thrive in their new premises, over 30 new local jobs have been created and we have also enjoyed 100’s of local school children visiting us as part of our educational offering. Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the council added: “The team and volunteers at the Chester House Estate were privileged and honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness to the site to witness first-hand their hard work and the excellent, historically important asset we have here in North Northamptonshire.
