Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands marked her 21st birthday with a dazzling state banquet, showcasing her modern elegance and growing confidence as heir apparent to the Dutch throne.
Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands celebrated her 21st birthday in a dazzling display of regal elegance during a state banquet . Just days before her milestone, the Princess, heir apparent to the Dutch throne, welcomed Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, alongside her parents, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, during a two-day state visit.
For the occasion, Catharina-Amalia shone in a lavender sequinned gown by Japanese designer Tadashi Shoji, featuring a striking sweetheart neckline and a dramatic cape - a signature style emerging for the young Princess. A tribute to her guests, Catharina-Amalia adorned herself with the red sash and gold star of Portugal's Order of Christ, bestowed upon her earlier in the day. Her accessories spoke volumes: diamond earrings from the royal vault, a diamond collet necklace, and a diamond bracelet steeped in family history. The bracelet, a smaller piece crafted from the Dutch East Indies Bracelet, was originally gifted to her great-grandmother, Queen Juliana, as a wedding present in 1937. However, the true highlight of her ensemble was the Dutch Star Tiara. This masterpiece combines elements from various royal tiaras passed down through generations. Designed by Queen Maxima for her wedding in 2002, it customises a diamond festoon base from the Pearl Button Tiara, replacing the pearl accents with sparkling diamond stars. The tiara's history stretches back to the 19th century, worn as brooches by Queen Sophie, wife of Willem III. It is believed the festoon base might have originally been part of a coronet also owned by Queen Sophie. In its current form, the tiara made its public debut in 1965, worn by Queen Juliana. Subsequent appearances include Princess Beatrix's investiture as Queen in 1980, Princess Margriet's wedding to Pieter van Vollenhoven in 1967, and Maxima's wedding to Willem-Alexander in 2002. Notably, Maxima remains the only royal to have worn both versions of the tiara - with pearls and with diamond stars. Reflecting her modern elegance and growing confidence, Catharina-Amalia's preference for bold, structured silhouettes echoes her mother's style. While she continues her studies at the University of Amsterdam for a Bachelor of Science degree in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics, the Princess is gradually stepping into her future role as queen. Her journey began with a first overseas tour to the Dutch Caribbean in January 2023, followed by her attendance at her first state banquet hosted by the Spanish royal family in April of this year. Earlier, in June 2022, she debuted her tiara at Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway's 18th birthday gala, wearing the renowned Dutch Star Button Tiara. Since then, she has showcased the Ruby Peacock Tiara and Queen Emma of the Netherlands' Sapphire Tiara. Becoming heir apparent in 2013, following her father's accession to the throne after Queen Beatrix's abdication, Catharina-Amalia is poised to become a modern and influential monarch
