ALPACA, the instrument measures the light emitted by the halo of neutral atoms surrounding plasma in tokamak reactors.

A new diagnostic tool developed by researchers at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory aims to increase the heat of nuclear fusion reactions and the overall power output.

“Because the plasma is at 100 million degrees Celsius, we can’t just use an oven thermometer or anything conventional. They would just melt,” said Laszlo Horvath, a physicist at the PPPL involved in ALPACA assembly and installation. The hydrogen fuel used in fusion reactors comes from three different sources. First, puffs of hydrogen are used to generate the plasma inside the tokamak.

“If we can increase the plasma’s density, then we can have more fusion reactions, which generate more fusion power,” explained Horvath in a press release.
