Meanwhile, Doritos has been experimenting with a new square shape for its tortilla chips, a potential major change for the iconic brand.
Pringles has launched a brand new mystery flavor as part of a nostalgic campaign with Nintendo's Super Mario game. The catch? The brand hasn't revealed what the product tastes like, leaving people to figure out the ' mystery flavor ' for themselves. The intriguing silver tubes are currently being sold in Sainsbury's supermarket for £2.25, and the packaging gives little away other than that it's got something to do with the iconic 90s video game.
The game's logo is featured on the front, along with a giant question mark. Shoppers have been rushing to try the latest offering from Pringles and work out what the flavor could be. On Instagram, @Mood4FoodUK thought the crisps tasted like 'ketchup' and 'BBQ' but ultimately admitted they were 'stumped' by the taste, whereas @NewFoodsUK claimed it was 'spicy pizza'. The heat seems to be the only thing people can definitively agree on, as in the comments, many people shared that the new Pringles were spicy. Other guesses included 'spicy meatballs' and 'chilli cheese'. Not everyone was keen on the flavor though. There were a few who were outraged that the crisps weren't mushroom flavor, as they felt this would be more appropriate. On Reddit a user known as u/KikoiBear wasn't impressed by the mystery Pringles at all, rating them a 5/10. They added: 'This s**t is way too spicy and the flavor is mid.' And a few weren't bothered about solving the mystery at all, as u/Cobruh joked: 'No one knows what it tastes like but it’s provocative.' A spokesperson for Pringles told Metro: 'We know Pringles fans LOVE great flavour, so we’re putting the nation’s tastebuds to the test with a brand new limited-edition “mystery flavour” – giving snack lovers up and down the country a chance to win a trip to New York IF they can guess what it is. As we turn back the clocks with our nostalgia-powered gaming campaign, celebrating our partnership with 40 year old gaming icon Super Mario – would-be snack detectives can pick up our brand new silver mystery flavour tubes in store and put their guessing skills to the test. So, for seasoned gamers and snack lovers who have a yearning for the 90s and 00s, get ready to join the tastiest guessing game of the year.' They added that the mystery flavor will be revealed in May, once the competition has ended.In other big crisp news, Doritos recently caused a stir after teasing a major change to the iconic shape of their tortilla chips. The brand revealed they’d been experimenting with a brand new square shape, instead of the triangles we all know and love. Since 1964 when the crisps first debuted in Southern California in the US, they’ve been made in a triangular shape. They were the first tortilla chip sold nationally in the States rolling out across the whole of America two years later in 1966, before finally coming across the pond to the UK in 1994. While there have been various new flavours and tweaks to the product over the last 61 years, with 3D versions and various ‘Doritos mixes’ being sold, the shape of the crisps has pretty much remained the same, so this would be a pretty big deal if it were to happen. The launch of square crisps hasn’t yet been confirmed by either PepsiCo or Walkers (who own the brand), however, a spokesperson for Doritos did tell Metro that the new shape is something they have been ‘exploring’. They said: ‘The news isn’t ready to be shared quite yet, but great to know how much interest there is in the shape of our chips’
