Kerryanne Clarke is using her experience of addiction to help others.
A Lanarkshire mum says she has turned her life around to help others after stealing thousands of pounds from her employer to feed her cocaine habit.
READ MORE: Glasgow woman with blue badge fined for parking in disabled bay at Braehead shopping centre "I did some things that I am not proud of to fund my addiction," said 44-year-old Kerryanne, who started using cocaine at the age of 29. She added: "Other residents were the best support. They gave me that confidence. I had already put my family through enough. I had hit rock bottom and I didn't want to go back to that."
Then, in 2020, she confidently took the helm of the new North Lanarkshire Recovery Community - an enabling group that empowers people in recovery and makes recovery visible. As well as its cafes, it organises recovery walks, street soccer sessions, yoga and other activities. And it is proof that people do recover.
They're encouraged by North Lanarkshire Recovery Community to avoid mixing with their usual crowd and find a new way of living through focusing on training, volunteering and peer support. Team leader Kerryanne and her colleagues have seen people who walked through their door with an alcohol addiction in April - and have been sober ever since, simply because someone with lived experience took an interest in them and listened, without judging, to what they had to say.
"I can share that experience with another person coming in [to North Lanarkshire Recovery Community]. They are losing their kids. They do not see any hope. They feel as if they are better not being here.
