Alex Wood is many things: a musical child prodigy, infamous imposter of the aristocracy - and perpetrator of a huge banking fraud, writes author and former Wandsworth Prison inmate Chris Atkins.
Alex never seemed to mind being in prison and treated everything as a massive joke, but he eventually explained this was all an act. “Bit of a coping strategy. Some people cut themselves, I make jokes and act the clown. But it’s not who I am. I would be sociopathic in the extreme if I was really like this.” As time will tell, it’s still an open question whether Alex is indeed sociopathic in the extreme.. One day I asked him why he picked this highly unusual figure.
“I’m trying to put myself in that situation, and I don’t think I’d enjoy it,” I admitted. “I’d be too scared that I’d get found out”. “The risk of it actually turned me on,” he replied with a mad glint in his eye. “Exactly, and because of that, most people would be afraid of attacking it. Everyone thinks you can’t defraud Claridge’s as it’s too secure, and so therefore no one tries. Their guard is entirely down. It’s the old thing with the supermodel in the nightclub; they simply don’t get chatted up because everyone thinks they’re out of their league.”
“Why did you keep pushing your luck?” I asked. “In truth, I’d probably had a bit of a breakdown. My violin career had also recently come to“I was a child prodigy. A bit like Mozart, taken all over the globe to perform. I went to the Purcell School, which is a hothouse for top musicians, and then got a Queen Mother Scholarship to the Royal College of Music.”
