John Winchcole received an indeterminate sentence for public protection in 2008. The controversial sentences were introduced in 2005 and were intended for criminals considered 'dangerous' and persistent, but whose offences did not merit a life sentence.
As reported in the Manchester Evening News, a post-mortem examination found he died as a result of suicide. Less than a month earlier, the Parole Board told him he was staying behind bars. He was released on licence in July 2017, however, his licence was revoked in April, the PPO said. He was arrested on May 25 and taken to HMP Forest Bank the following day.
It was reviewed 'several times' at meetings he attended, jurors heard, before it ended on June 26, 2018.
