The government has put emergency measures in place to deal with convicted criminals
Emergency measures have been triggered in the North of England to tackle prison overcrowding as the number of rioters being sentenced surges.
The operation is set to be implemented across several regions including the North East and Yorkshire; Cumbria and Lancashire; and Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. Prisons and probation minister Lord Timpson commented: "We inherited a justice system in crisis and exposed to shocks. As a result, we have been forced into making difficult but necessary decisions to keep it operating.
He further assured: "Policing will continue to arrest anyone that they need to in order to keep the public safe, including policing protests and events and ensuring that people are arrested as expected." The Conservative government previously initiated Operation Early Dawn in May, aiming to address the issue of prison overcrowding.
