BREAKING: Priti Patel warns criminals seeking to exploit crisis ‘We are on to you’
Priti Patel has warned criminals seeking to ‘exploit and capitalise’ on the coronavirus crisis: ‘We are on to you.’
Losses from Covid-19 related scams – such as phishing emails from fraudsters posing as genuine organisations like the WHO or websites selling bogus PPE – now stands at £2.4 million. However, Ms Patel told the daily Downing Street briefing that law enforcement ‘is also adapting’ alongside the criminals. She said: ‘Provisional data from police shows a fall in overall crime during this coronavirus outbreak – car crime, burglary and shoplifting are all lower than the same period last year.
‘So today I have a message for them – our world class law enforcement are also adapting and they are onto you. And their efforts are paying off.’
