Private schools are expecting an onslaught of parents to give a term notice in September if Labour's VAT policy is introduced mid-way through the academic year
Asked whether the plans will be brought in from January, Ms Phillipson said: “We want to move as quickly as we can on this. As I say, Rachel Reeves will set out the exact timescale. But we first set out this policy in 2021. So I do think schools have had ample time to prepare. Introducing the policy in January would “100 per cent parents over the edge and it will make them very angry as well”.Simon Larter Evans, principal of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, said bringing in the VAT policy in January will cause a “sudden financial shock” to both the school and parents.
“Certainly, some of our parents would be priced out instantly. I would expect lots of our parents to phone us and say, ‘I can’t do this anymore, we have to go’. A spokesperson from the Independent Schools Council said: “I think that it could prompt a lot of parents to think again because they will have been budgeting based on a certain date that’s now been moved.
