As more top private schools charge fees exceeding $40,000 a year, competition for academic, music and all-rounder scholarships and bursaries is increasing

Demand for scholarship spots at Sydney’s private schools is rising, with at least 20 institutions offering places in year 4 and 5 in a bid to lock in high-achieving students before they reach high school.

, competition for academic, music and all-rounder scholarships and bursaries is increasing, with schools offering to cover 30 per cent to full-fee places.Robert Allwell, the head of scholarship test provider Academic Assessment Services that runs tests for about 60 schools, said the number of applicants for year 5 and 7 entry jumped about 30 per cent since 2018.

A spokesperson for north shore’s co-ed Barker College said the school had 474 applications for academic, music, financial need and Indigenous scholarships for 2024, up 10 per cent on last year. “We have a needs-based assistance program based on an interview. We also started academic scholarships for students coming into year 7 because we started losing academically gifted pupils to selective schools, which is very difficult when the top students leave.”

“This requires schools to be rather more savvy in how they choose to select a student. The scholarship industry has also been fertilised by external accountability measures for schools such as academic league tables.”
