Pro-Palestine students from the University of Melbourne have begun their 'Gaza solidarity encampment' with about 100 protesters fighting to have the institution cut ties with weapons manufacturers with links to Israel.

Dozens of tents have been pitched at the University of Melbourne as pro-Palestine protesters, joined by Greens MP Tim Read, kicked off their encampment demonstration following scrutiny around the ill-timed date. Pro-Palestine students from the University of Melbourne have begun their" Gaza solidarity encampment" with about 100 protesters fighting to have the institution cut ties with weapons manufacturers with links to Israel .

Picture: Trade Unionists for Palestine “That any of the companies might have anything to do with the bombardment, the slaughter, the genocide that is going on in Gaza right now is beyond describable, it’s unconscionable and the university has a responsibility to cut all ties with weapon manufacturers.

The action group is demanding the University of Melbourne cut ties with nuclear weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin, Boeing airlines who committed $3 million to support Israel following October 7, British weapons manufacturer BAE Systems and weapons manufacture Rosebank Engineering – which had its Melbourne factory targeted by protesters in February.

"Freedom of speech is respected and supported at the University of Melbourne and is central to our values and identity. The University welcomes debate and peaceful protest on campus, provided it does not extend to violence, threat or intimidation. At all times, the safety of our staff, students and visitors is paramount.

"The University of Melbourne deplores and actively stands against all forms of racism, including Antisemitism and Islamophobia."The event has been under intense scrutiny, with social media users sharing their concern about the event being held on a significant day for Australians, Anzac Day.
