An investigation is underway in the state’s west after the discovery of hundreds of slaughtered horses were left to rot in a dry creek bed near Wagga Wagga.

An investigation has been launched into a potential illegal knackery operation after hundreds of dead horses were found in a creek bed covered in soil on a regional NSW property.

The council’s general manager Peter Thompson told local media it appeared to involve more than 500 horses. It is unclear how long the potential illegal knackery had been going on for as the levels of decomposition among the carcasses were different.
