From the outside, the nondescript brick and glass building in Colindale in London’s northern suburbs looks like the headquarters for an insurance company, or maybe a large call centre. In fact, the building is home to Public Health England’s national reference laboratory, a maze of different labs for different diseases with the critical role of “protecting the nation’s health”.
