Plans to save Cambuslang Library are being discussed by council officials and the local community council.
Some progress has been made to save Cambuslang Library from closure following a second large-scale protest.
“It was great to get the support from local councillors like Katy Loudon, Maureen Chalmers, Norman Rae, Walter Brogan and Margaret Walker, as well as meeting our local MP Michael Shanks afterwards.“When I went into the library afterwards, all of the staff were in tears.Local author of books such as The Rowan Tree, Kirsten MacQuarrie, made a speech at the protest, and said: “Without South Lanarkshire Libraries, I would not be a writer. Nor would I be a librarian.
“I’m glad there is now a tentative plan to maintain the library service where it is now with a long-term vision to join a community hub on the Main Street. This is an exciting project but will take time and it’s right the current facility is maintained. “The SLLC ‘modelling’ ignores the social importance of the three libraries, and that they serve some of the most deprived areas of South Lanarkshire.
“Our intention has been to refurbish the empty unit for a mix of commercial and non-commercial uses. We said this proposal could be modified to rehouse Cambuslang Library. SLC responded positively and asked us to prepare a paper for our next meeting. “This is important because it means that Cambuslang Library would continue to be part of the public library network in Scotland, would be run by qualified library staff and have access to the SPYDUS public library management system .However, there are some important questions left unanswered.
“Terms like ‘reprovisioning’ are causing a great deal of concern, and there is still a complete lack of detail on what they actually mean.
