Guardians fans were in fine voice on a hot and sticky afternoon at Progressive Field.

Steven Kwan watches his leadoff home run in the fifth inning Saturday fly into the right field seats against Toronto at Progressive Field. The Guardians won, 6-3.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The crowd, the biggest to see the Guardians at home this season, was in fine voice on a hot and sticky Saturday afternoon.

Then there were chants, more murmurs at first, of “MVP, MVP, MVP.” Ramirez is used to hearing such praise, but they were not directed at him. They were for Steven Kwan, Cleveland’s leadoff hitter., Kwan went 0 for 4. In doing so, his 14-game hitting streak and 25-game on base streak came to an end.over the Jays with a double into the right field corner. In the fifth, he homered, his sixth of the season and second in four games. The streaks were forgotten and the MVP chants were heard.

Kwan was down playing the crowd’s reaction. He understands the hot and cold nature of the game he plays. There are things, however, that can’t be down played. Kwan entered Sunday’s game hitting .390 with 45 runs, 12 doubles, two triples and 22 RBI. His six homers are a career high. He’s played in just 48 of the Guardians 74 games after missing four weeks with a strained left hamstring. He does not have enough plate appearances to qualify for the AL batting title race, but at his current pace of 4.

“You have to have that mindset when you’re playing 162 games a year,” said Kwan. “You can’t get caught up in those things because the next thing you know you’re 0 for whatever and you’re still thinking about what happened a week ago. “Streaks are fun,” said Vogt. “It’s something to follow. The thing about Kwani is even though he had a hitting streak snapped, he was happy we won. He just hits. That may not be the only streak he has this year.”

Through 48 games in 2023, Kwan was hitting .258 with 11 doubles, one homer, 14 RBI with 26 walks and 21 strikeouts. He had a .344 on base percentage, a .344 slugging percentage and a .688 OPS.
