Proposition 9 on the Anchorage municipal ballot would pay for better access to popular trails in the Chugach State Park.
, a $4 million bond to make improvements to an access road to some of Chugach State Park’s most popular trails, is a test case to see if voters will act on previously approved legislation.
Roger Marks, a bond supporter who pushed for the CASA, said the road’s rough, unpaved section is used year-round and is becoming more dangerous as traffic increases. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for the Division of Natural Resources said the Parks Division supports municipal upgrades to improve access to the park. The email cited several ongoing park upgrades at Prospect Heights and the Canyon Road/Sunnyside trailhead.
“I love the way the traffic goes slow, and one reason the traffic goes slow is because the road is so narrow and rough,” Robinson said. “But when the road’s improved, everybody’s going to go faster.”
