A lawyer for President Biden’s son told jurors he was not using crack cocaine around the time he bought a gun in 2018.
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, joined by his his wife Melissa Cohen Biden, depart from the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building on June 4, 2024, in Wilmington, Del. WILMINGTON, Del. — Prosecutors told a jury Tuesday that President Biden’s son Hunter was on trial not because of who he is, but for what he did, because “no one is above the law."during the 2020 presidential campaign.
Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell told jurors that his client should be acquitted because the path from addiction to recovery, relapse, and back again is difficult — and because, he said, Biden was not smoking crack at the key time period highlighted in the indictment.Lowell noted that Biden was traveling extensively during that part of 2018, and his behavior shows that he was not in the throes of substance abuse.
“This case is just like any other we try in this courthouse and this country,” Assistant Special Counsel Derek Hines said, speaking to a packed courtroom in which Hunter’s mother, first lady Jill Biden, sat behind him, and Secret Service agents guarded the Biden family members.“No one is above the law,” Hines said. “In this country, the law applies equally to all people.”
“We would not be here today if he was just a drug addict,” Hines told the jury. “The defendant’s choice to buy that gun is why we’re here.” Lowell said his client did not “knowingly” lie on the gun purchase paperwork in October 2018 because at the time he denied being an addict or drug abuser, Biden thought he had beaten his drug addiction.and threw it out — into a trash can at an upscale grocery store, where it was later found by a man looking for recyclable cans and bottles.
In one exchange, Biden appeared to feel he’d been shortchanged, and he sent a picture of white powder on what appeared to be a green-colored bank or credit card.
