The Salt Lake City planning director is investigating after a registered historic building was partially demolished on March 31, 2024. Two men who were hoping to buy and then give new life to the historic Fifth Ward Meetinghouse say they now know they were deceived by the current owner.
After the sudden and illegal partial demolition of the property on Easter Sunday, the two said they spoke with the current owner, Jordan Atkin. Since then the man who was hired to demolish the property has told KUTV that there was no miscommunication in what he was told by Atkin. He says Atkin instructed him to demolish the entire building and showed him papers that he believed were the full permits needed to demolish the structure.“That’s what happened, right? We were lied to a 100 percent," said Sorensen.
Sorensen and Buck say they had hoped to turn the building into a community space and entertainment venue, and say they were aware the cost to fix up the building wouldn't be cheap.
