'Protect our green space from urban sprawl': Residents of Pendle warn against future housing developments
The people of Colne have called for green spaces with great views and wildlife on the edge of the town to be protected from future housing developments, as Pendle Council prepares a new local plan.
At the Executive meeting Labour Coun Asjad Mahmood, the new council leader, said: “One of the many issues is about the number of houses that Pendle chooses to use in the plan. In the past, a higher figure was used. If a lower figure is taken forward now then the officer will ask for evidence.” John Birchenough said: “I want the council to consider the opportunities in the local plan to continue to contribute to Pendle’s green spaces. An independent examiner has said The Rough meets three criteria to be designated a green local space. He said that if Pendle Council did not designate it, then he would. This site is clearly needed. There’s an opportunity to take positive action to protest Pendle’s open spaces.
She said: “I love The Lenches and Waterside area. I love the amazing townscape and landscape, which is so wild. I’ve been campaigning for protection for the Lenches since 1999. There is woodland, bluebells, wild flowers and two mill ponds. There are great crested newts, water oysters the size of plates, damsel flies and dragon flies, which are pretty rare. Birds of prey. It’s a rich habitat.”
Labour Coun Mohammad Hanif said other towns, such as Brierfield, also have important areas with wildlife such as deer. Feedback was needed from residents in all towns and villages to make the local plan the best it could be before going to the government.
