Mikheil Kavelashvili was selected by politicians after an election in October that opposition parties say was beset by fraud

Demonstrators hold red cards outside the Georgian parliament where new President Mikheil Kavelashvili is sworn in An ex-Manchester City footballer has been sworn in as President of Georgia while protesters hold red cards outside his residence claiming he is not the legitimate leader.Outgoing president Salome Zourabichvili, 72, told protesters outside the Orbeliani Palace in Tbilisi as she was leaving the residence that Kavelashvili had no legitimacy in the role.

The 53-year-old former footballer was selected by politicians following an October election that Zourabichvili and other opposition parties says was beset by fraud. Kavelashvili played as a striker for Manchester City and also played in the Swiss Super League before being elected to parliament in 2016 on the Georgian Dream ticket. In 2022 he co-founded the People’s Power movement which has been sharply critical of the West.

In a speech after being sworn in, Kavelashvili said he would be “everyone’s president, regardless of whether they like me or not.”
