Two protesters have spray painted the logo of a gas company onto an iconic Australian painting in a bid to raise awareness of a project they say will destroy Indigenous rock art. 9News
Two protesters went to the Art Gallery of Western Australia around 10.30am AWST and defaced the 1889Perth protester Joana Partyka sprayed yellow paint with the logo "Woodside" on the glass protecting the artwork before gluing her hand to the wall of the gallery. Ballardong Noongar man Desmond Blurton then unfurled an Aboriginal flag on the floor of the gallery.
Oil and gas company Woodside has constructed the Perdaman fertiliser plant at the Burrup Peninsula which is home to the largest collection of ancient Indigenous rock art. Protesters are devastated by twhat they say is a threat to Indigenous rock art and the impacts the plant has on the climate.They have called on Woodside to end the fossil fuel projects in the area.It's understood Western Australia police are on the scene at the art gallery and 9news.com.au has requested further comment.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia told 9news.com.au there is no damage to the artwork as it is covered "by acrylic ". "The protester has been removed from the Gallery and the matter is now with the WA Police," the spokesperson said.Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek appointed an independent reporter in September to examine any threat posed to Aboriginal sites by projects on the Burrup Peninsula.
