The Eagles downed the Raiders 6-3 on Thursday night at Providence behind strong pitching from Win Brock and a towering home run by C.J. Sullivan.
Jon Johnson The area championship is on the line when Houston Academy hosts Providence Christian at Northcutt Field on Friday starting at 4:30 p.m.
Both teams have clinched state playoff berths, but home-field advantage for the opening round will go to the winner of the game Friday. “I felt in the third inning that they were starting to get the momentum a little bit,” Providence coach Casey Smith said. “For us to bounce back like that kind of swung it back our way a little bit.”
An inning later, Providence plated three more runs to lead 6-1 when Brock singled in Brooks Canady, who had doubled, Roman Banner singled up the middle to drive in Brock, who had advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Banner scored after advancing to third on a wild pitch and then coming in after the throw to third from the catcher went into left field.
Chance Smith was then brought in to pitch in relief of Brock with runners at second and third with one out. Smith knows his team will be in for a battle tomorrow when the two teams square off again with the area title going to the victor.
