A psychiatrist testified in court that removing bin bags from a mental health ward where a young woman died was not a simple task, highlighting the complexities surrounding the case. Alice Figueiredo died by suicide in 2015 while being treated at Goodmayes Hospital in London. The ward manager and the NHS Trust face charges related to her death.
An expert psychiatrist has stated that it was not a 'straightforward' process to remove plastic bin liners from a mental health hospital ward where a young woman tragically took her own life, a court has been informed. Alice Figueiredo, 22 years old, was receiving treatment on the Hepworth Ward at Goodmayes Hospital in Ilford, east London, and her death occurred in July 2015. The court had previously heard that she had attempted to self-harm 18 times using bin bags found on the ward.
The ward manager of the unit, 55-year-old Benjamin Aninakwa, faces charges of gross negligence and manslaughter. The North East London NHS Trust (NELFT) is accused of corporate manslaughter. Both defendants deny the allegations against them. Consultant psychiatrist Dr. Bradley Hillier, while testifying at the Old Bailey, explained that he had meticulously examined all records pertaining to Alice's care during her hospitalization and assessed the role of the ward manager. 'Ward managers are not truly responsible for making unilateral decisions,' Dr. Hillier stated. 'The ward is not the personal domain of the ward manager.' He argued that this situation demonstrated the complexity of the decision-making process. Additionally, Dr. Hillier pointed out that bin bags were not immediately removed from the ward following Alice's death. 'If it were as simple as removing them from the ward, that would have been done immediately,' he asserted. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, officers were dispatched to Lewisham High Street on Monday after receiving reports of a man brandishing a knife in a flat window.
