The owner says it wouldn't be sustainable without beer garden trade
Pub-goers have rallied to defend a country inn which the owner fears could be forced to close amid a planning wrangle. The Old Vol, in Caythorpe, has made a retrospective planning application in a bid to keep features in its beer garden which were built without planning permission.
Owner Sean Reddington said without garden trade, the pub might struggle to survive. "We'd be left with a picnic bench effectively if everything was taken away and so many people would lose their jobs. Inside just wouldn't be a profitable business. Thousands of hospitality venues closed last year, it just wouldn't be sustainable.
The Old Vol's post said: "Not only does our team consist of some of the best in business, we are proud to have given over 100 of the local community their first job with the flexibility to learn and train as much as they want. We want to continue this. Keeping the garden as it is and adding a roof will enable us to employ a further 20+ new staff.
A man commented: "My wife and I live a couple of hundred yards away from the Old Vol, we never find there to be an issue with the small amount of noise made, and that is only once or twice per week for a short time. The Old Vol provides the village with great place to eat, drink and on the odd occasion, be entertained. It also provides employment and allows young chefs to gain experience in a quality kitchen. Great pubs like the Old Vol will go to the wall if not supported by the locals.
