Landlord Darren Snell claims evidence suggests The Black Lion pub in Nantwich, Cheshire, could date back to the 17th century, potentially witnessing the town's famous Civil War battle. The discovery stems from a 1624 map and records detailing a former landlord with relatives buried in the early 1600s.

Landlord Darren Snell said it was "fitting" that his pub may have witnessed the town's famous Civil War battle

Darren Snell said The Black Lion in Nantwich, Cheshire, featured on a map which indicated it was at least 40 years older than initially thought. "It certainly seems as though it could stem back to 1624, which is 20 years before the great Battle of Nantwich," he said.He added there were also records detailing a former landlord, with relatives buried in the early 1600s, suggesting the pub might have been standing in 1605.
