In a BMA survey, 42 per cent of the public said ministers were the cause of growing delays and just 15 per cent of people blame medics as they prepare to walkout again this week.
BMA members have been on strike for several months and look set to carry on through winter in their dispute with the Government over pay Some 42 per cent of the public said ministers were the cause of growing delays, with just 15 per cent of people blaming medics as they prepare to walkout again this week.
The Prime Minister made reducing NHS waiting lists one of his five key pledges but numbers continue to rise. Rishi Sunak has sought to blame doctors for the increases. The BMA pointed out that the waiting lists for elective treatment have risen from 2.6 million in 2010, when the Conservatives took over from Labour in Government, to almost 7.7 million in 2023.
“As the party in government for the last 13 years they need to use this year’s conference to look back at their record and consider there might be an alternative to policies that have led to millions more on waiting lists and an NHS on its knees. We will be there to help suggest a better way – one that values doctors properly.”
Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said: “Waiting lists were getting longer even before the pandemic, a symptom of a decade of underinvestment and severe staff shortages with a need for more health services in the community and to ensure we have enough hospital beds.
