Many Americans have lost confidence in the importance of public health recommendations like vaccines.
Heather Simpson, a Texas mom of a 6-year-old, grew up getting vaccines as part of her health care but made a different choice for her daughter. Shortly before getting pregnant, she watched a documentary series claiming to tell “the truth about vaccines,” and it convinced her that vaccines were deadly and unnecessary.Every time she asked one of her doctors about the risks, though, they brushed her off. “My ob/gyn was very nonchalant about my vaccine concerns,” she says.
A big takeaway: Public health institutions are at a disadvantage in today’s information landscape. Whether the issue is vaccines, masks, opioids, or food deserts, anti–public health groups have launched a coordinated effort to discredit public health institutions. It is no longer enough for public health educators to convey recommendations based on their research and expertise.
