Public may conclude that a photo never lies – even if Boris Johnson does | PaulWaugh

The key difficulty for Johnson’s defence lies in all those images of him raising a glass near staff at drinks eventsThe Clerk to the Committee, left, administers the oath to former prime minister Boris Johnson ahead of his evidence to the Privileges Committee at the House of Commons and his indignance levels rose, things went rapidly downhill.

There’s no question that Johnson relies on his larger-than-life reputation. He’s the Big Dog who made the Big Calls and got a Big Majority. Yet although the ex-PM’s allies argue that all this Partygate stuff is, his whoppers still worry many of his MPs. The real question is whether Parliament wants to let this sleeping dog lie – in both senses of that word.

The calm didn’t last. The Committee’s approach had been “manifestly unfair”, he said. It relied on a “staggeringly implausible” case that he would invite an official photographer to an “illicit” rule-breaking event in No 10. The social distancing rules didn’t mean an “electrified forcefield” around everyone working in Downing Street preventing them from getting near others.
