If the Met are ever to restore a glimmer of public trust, they must do better than empty promises and victim-blaming advice.

, outlining the measures they will be taking to “protect women and girls”, which included, “deploying 650 new officers into busy public places, including those where women and girls often lack confidence that they are safe.”

I truly don't understand how this is meant to reassure women, given that Sarah was arrested by a serving police officer in public place, and in front of witnesses. The statement also included the truly baffling advice for what to do if “you have concerns an officer is threat to you,” which suggested asking the police officer questions, seeking “independent verification” of what they say, and – if that fails and you feel like you're in “real and imminent danger”, then you “must seek assistance - shouting out to a passer-by, running into a house, knocking on a door, waving a bus down or if you are in the position to do so calling 999.

This advice is all well and good if you are dealing with a police officer who doesn't intend to harm you but, as in Sarah's case, is entirely useless if you are faced with one who does.
