In a trial lasting just 43 hours, Tasmania's new mobile phone detection cameras captured people breaking the law at a rate of one infringement every 7.6 minutes. If it was an exercise in revenue raising, which authorities insist it most certainly wasn't, that would have netted $132,000 in fines.

In their first year, the cameras caught 170,000 drivers and front-seat passengers and $159 million in fines were issued.

Tasmania's Road Safety Advisory Council says speed, distraction and not wearing a seatbelt contributed to 60 per cent of road deaths. "Now, I can't claim that these cameras are responsible for that improvement. But I dare to believe that they've saved some crashes, some injuries, and some lives," Mr Ferguson said.So, what are the rules?
