WATCH LIVE: Alan Joyce fronts the Senate’s cost of living inquiry after recording a record profit.
Joyce is asked whether he agrees with Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones’ comments that allowing greater international airline competition could “drive prices down to a level where it’s unsustainable for the existing Australian-based carrier”.
“What we do agree with is that there are very good reasons why airlines grant and don’t grant traffic rights,” Joyce says. “Various countries around the world protect their national interest and I think what the assistant treasurer was referring to is that Australia should protect its own national interest.
“That is making sure we get reciprocal or other arrangements when you grant traffic rights [to foreign airlines]. “I don’t think anyone would say you should grant traffic rights that are disadvantageous to the national interest.54 mins ago
