Alan Joyce may have parachuted out of Qantas, but public fury means there’s no end to the government’s political punishment over the Qatar decision.

It’s also hard to see how Joyce’s successor, Vanessa Hudson, can avoid sharing the public opprobrium given her close involvement with the Qantas record of behaviour as former CFO.has been the failure of the Albanese government to notice the ominous black clouds gathering around an airline still proudly proclaiming itself the spirit of Australia.

That reaction was another demonstration of how removed Joyce and his board had become from the damage Qantas was inflicting on its own brand.

It’s more nonsensical to suggest Qatar’s increased flights wouldn’t help competition – and lower fares – on popular routes to Europe. Qatar’s domestic partner, Virgin, estimates international fares would fall by 20 or 25 per cent. So, why not allow it?
