Qatar leaned on Fifa over LGBT rainbow armband at World Cup, insiders believe 🟢 Football industry insider says it ‘looks like’ Qatar leaned on Fifa over the anti-discrimination armband, ‘just like with the beer’
Qatar was accused on Monday of leaning on Fifa after England and Wales were forced to drop plans to wear rainbow-coloured anti-discrimination armbands in their World Cup matches after Fifa threatened them with sporting sanctions.
The original band’s rainbow colours are associated with the Pride flag and had been set to be a strong statement in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships. “As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games,” a joint statement said.Mr Andrew, the Sport Minister, said he was “frustrated” and would be testing Qatar’s commitment to inclusivity during a visit to the World Cup next week.
