Qcells, a subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Corp, has achieved a world record for the efficiency of a large-area silicon solar cell with a perovskite top layer. This breakthrough could significantly reduce the size of solar projects and lower costs. Qcells reports a 28.6% cell efficiency on an M10 commercial-sized cell using this technology, exceeding the 27% efficiency of crystalline silicon cells and the 21% of traditional commercial silicon solar panels.

While China's Longi has reached efficiencies above 30% on smaller cells, Qcells' achievement on a larger scale is notable. Danielle Merfeld, Qcells' chief technology officer, explains that using more efficient cells means fewer panels are needed for the same power output, leading to less land usage, reduced materials, and lower installation costs. This development comes at a crucial time as large solar projects face increasing scrutiny over their land footprint. For example, California's Solar Star Project, one of the world's largest solar facilities, spans 3,000 acres with 1.7 million panels. In contrast, a natural gas power plant producing the same energy is located on just 122 acres. Silicon-based photovoltaic (Si PV) cells dominate the solar energy sector, with over 90% of panels manufactured using silicon. Si PV cells are known for their durability and ease of installation, and their manufacturing costs have significantly decreased in recent years, particularly in China
