More Queenslanders are being fined for driving less than 10km/h over the limit, with one expert saying a lot of people consider low-level speeding acceptable.

More Queenslanders are being fined for driving less than 10 kilometres over the limit in comparison to any other higher penalty bracket.

Dr Verity Truelove, a senior research fellow at the University of Sunshine Coast’s Road Safety Research Collaboration, said the use of enforcement, such as speed cameras and police patrols, had been shown to reduce speeding and ultimately road crashes. “This can be because drivers think this amount of speeding is safe and will get them to their destination quicker.”Truelove said the small increases in speed could still increase the chance of being in a crash, with the outcome more severe in crashes at higher speeds.“The small increases in speed also do not get people to their destination much quicker, if at all.”
