The picturesque village of Downham in Lancashire keeps its modern upgrades out of sight to maintain its historic charm.

As you enter the picturesque village of Downham in Lancashire, the first thing that strikes you is the untouched views of the sprawling countryside. Next, you might spot that the charming stone cottages lining the winding lane lack modern features such as TV aerials, power lines, or satellite dishes.

The Asshetons have owned the hamlet for half a millenium, including the ancestral home of Downham Hall and the stunning 3,000 acres of rolling countryside that surrounds it, reports the Manchester Evening News. The ancestral Downham Estate is currently under the stewardship of the Hon Ralph Assheton, with the family's residence, Downham Hall, being one of the village's most stunning properties.

"It's just a lovely little village and we get lots of visitors here who say it's so beautiful, yet you've got a bustling town like Clitheroe less than 10 minutes away." For theAssheton family, keeping the village frozen in time is not the primary objective. Instead, they are focused on moving Downham forward, whilst retaining its charm.

"The Estate today is grappling with how to achieve as low a carbon footprint as possible and the current challenge is to upgrade very old and listed properties while avoiding damage and ugly alterations."
