Fabio Quartararo sets the pace on a windy Day 1 of the Official Sepang MotoGP test, while di Giannantonio and Fernandez suffer injuries.
Monster Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo topped the timesheets on the opening day of the Official Sepang MotoGP test, despite challenging wind conditions. Quartararo clocked a best lap of 1 minute 57.794 seconds during the shakedown sessions on Sunday, setting the benchmark for the official test to come. New Ducati signing Marc Marquez secured a late second-place finish ahead of his brother Alex Marquez, rookie Fermin Aldeguer, and Franco Morbidelli. Joan Mir finished sixth for Honda.
KTM's Pedro Acosta led the charge for the Austrian manufacturer in 11th place, while rookie Ai Ogura was the highest-placed RS-GP rider in 16th, highlighting a difficult day for Aprilia. Meanwhile, Ducati test rider di Giannantonio suffered a second Turn 5 crash during the practice start period, resulting in a left collarbone fracture. He will return to Italy tonight. Trackhouse Racing team-mate Raul Fernandez also sustained a broken bone in his hand and will return to Spain tonight. Reigning world champion Jorge Martin is still undergoing medical checks in the hospital after an incident earlier in the day.The official test at Sepang continues Wednesday through Friday, with track action from 10 am to 6 pm each day, followed by practice starts. After Sepang, the next official test will be held at Buriram from February 12-13, just ahead of the Thai season-opener on February 28. Notably, engine specifications for Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia will be frozen from the Thai GP until the end of 2026. This move aims to control development costs in anticipation of the new 850cc era commencing in 2027.
