800,000 travellers have been hit, the president of SNCF - France's national state-owned railway company - said
Employees of SNCF railway company speak to passengers waiting for their trains’ departure at the Gare Montparnasse train station in Paris One in four Eurostar trains will be cancelled today and over the weekend following arson attacks on the French railway network, the company has said.
French prime minister Gabriel Attal said the vandals strategically targeted the main routes from the north, east and west towards Paris. Outgoing French prime minister Gabriel Attal has said sabotage and arson that hit key parts of France’s high speed rail network on the eve of the Olympics had “a clear objective: blocking the high speed train network”.
Ahmed Berrahal, a bus driver and CGT trade unionist in Pantin, a suburb in the northern Paris through which the Olympic Flame passed yesterday, warned of potential strikes amid the chaos. He added: “It’s the worst in the suburbs where the buses are the main transport. In central Paris it’s less bad because there’s the metro too but out in the suburbs, it’s dreadful.”The Prime Minister’s spokeswoman said: “Obviously the situation is concerning, and like the statements you’ve seen from the French, it is also incredibly frustrating for people travelling to attend the Games and the Olympic ceremony.
“I mean, am I going to stay and sleep here? I don’t want to because we live in Paris in fact, so we really need to go back home,” she said. In a statement, the rail service said: “Today, Eurostar will cancel 25 per cent of its trains. It will also be the case on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28. There is no indications the emergency was linked to the rail disruption and the massive attacks across France’s rail network, but the airport suspended all operations just after 10am this morning.
“We are absolutely sorry that we are not able to run the trains expected by the French,” he told BFMTV. A SNCF railway worker and a police officer work at the site where vandals targeted France’s high-speed train network with a series of coordinated attacks France’s “intelligence service and law enforcement agencies” have been “mobilised” following “acts of sabotage” carried out on rail lines overnight, France’s prime minister has said.He said: “I think of all the French people, all the families, who were preparing to go on vacation.
“Now is going to be 17:30pm. There is no other train available to Paris,” she said from the St Pancras terminal.
