Watch live: Charles III to be proclaimed King following the death of the Queen
Today, the formal proclamation of the new monarch will be televised for the first time in history.
First, the Privy Council - which includes politicians, senior members of the clergy and Supreme Court justices - gathers without the King to proclaim the new monarch and arrange business relating to the proclamation. The first public proclamation of the new sovereign is read in the open air from the Friary Court balcony at St James's Palace by the Garter King of Arms.
The scheduled included a church service on Sunday morning but only three of us, out of 150, wakened in time to attend. I'll never forget those 15 minutes and my children, all now grown up, have heard this story so often, they tell it better than I do.
