Vets have been forced to cull 26 of the Queen’s swans on the River Thames after the flock was struck down by bird flu.
In total, 33 birds are understood to have died after another swan was pulled from the water
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs called in a vet from the Swan Lifeline Rescue centre to humanely cull the birds.The Queen owns all unmarked mute swans in England and Wales, the most common type found in Britain.The Queen’s swan marker David Barber has reportedly informed the monarch about the cull.
Last week, Reading Borough Council warned people not to feed ducks and swans amid fears bird flu was spreading in Berkshire. A spokesperson for the charity told MailOnline: ‘We have a designated rescuer in the Reading area who has been dealing with the outbreak there for the past month and now have a designated rescuer in the Windsor area.‘It is hard and heartbreaking work but we are dedicated and determined.‘We are asking for your help as it is vital to contain this outbreak and limit the devastating consequences we know this virus can have.
